From the Roman Forum to the Modern Home
A deep dive into the 2,000-year journey of Italy’s most resilient protector.
The Canis Pugnax
The story begins with the Canis Pugnax, a fearless Molossian dog used by the Roman Empire. These dogs were the original "Cohors"—a term meaning protector. They didn't just guard the camps; they charged into battle alongside the legions, often wearing leather armor. Their courage was so legendary that they were used to hunt the most dangerous game in Europe, from wild boars to bears.

Chapter 1: The Roman War Dog
(4th Century)
The Guardian of the Masseria
After the fall of Rome, the breed adapted to the rural life of Southern Italy, specifically in the Puglia region. They became the ultimate "versatile" farm dog. One day they were driving cattle to market; the next, they were guarding the masserie (large country estates) against intruders. This period refined the breed's intelligence and their famous "switch"—the ability to be a calm family companion until a threat appeared.
Chapter 2: The Working Years
(Post-Empire)
The Miracle in Puglia
By the 1970s, modern farming machinery made the Corso’s job obsolete, and the breed nearly vanished. A small group of enthusiasts, led by Dr. Paolo Breber, traveled to remote Italian villages to find the last remaining specimens. Thanks to their dedicated recovery mission, the first official breed standard was drafted in 1983. Today, every Corso—including Gus and Mia—is a living piece of that rescued history.
